The Brussels guitarist Vitja Pauwels has become indispensable in the Belgian jazz scene. He draws inspiration from mentors like Bill Frisell, Daniel Lanois, and Ry Cooder, and has already collaborated with Marc Ribot and Jakob Bro. Besides his solo work, Vitja has made a name for himself in bands such as Bombataz, Naïma Joris, Warm Bad, Woolvs, and others.
The album Early Life Forms—which is also the name of the band—is a live recording of a concert that Pauwels gave with his 'dream band,' consisting of Frederik Leroux (guitar), Laurens Dierickx (Hammond organ), and Casper Van De Velde (drums). This performance emerged from a collaboration with guitarist Marc Ribot (Vitja’s favorite guitarist). The live album was recorded during the BRAND! Festival in 2022, featuring the aforementioned guitar idol.
"With Early Life Forms, guitarist Vitja Pauwels releases one of the standout albums of the spring.
Wild grooves, acoustic refinement, hints of film music, the spirit of Ry Cooder, and the Californian avant-garde of Latin Playboys: the new album by Brussels guitarist Vitja Pauwels has it all." - Bart Cornand, Focus Knack
