transparency

Transparency builds trust – it is a prerequisite for it. That's why we've created the 'Transparency' tab to provide more insight into Volta's selection procedures and way of working.

Selection of Artists

The selection of artists at Volta is done through a careful and open process of Open Calls, which are published annually. These Open Calls form the foundation of our commitment to inclusivity and transparency, and are intended to give a wide range of musicians and artists the opportunity to participate in the programs and residencies that Volta offers.

Inclusivity is central to Volta's approach. By opening up the Open Calls, Volta invites artists from all backgrounds, experience levels, and genres to apply. Volta firmly believes that diversity creates a rich and dynamic artistic community, and that every artist, regardless of their background, can contribute valuable perspectives and talents. Volta also takes measures to ensure that these calls are widely distributed and accessible to everyone, including underrepresented groups within the music sector. This may involve forming partnerships with community organizations, networks, and platforms that can connect with diverse artists.

Transparency is also a core value in the selection process. Volta provides clear information about the criteria and evaluation process, so that every applicant knows exactly what to expect and how their application will be assessed. This transparency fosters a culture of trust and respect between Volta and the artists we support. Volta not only looks at the artistic quality of the applications but also at how our collaboration can contribute to the personal and professional growth of the artist. Through this tailored and inclusive approach to selection and support, Volta affirms its commitment to fostering a rich, diverse, and dynamic artistic community.

Criteria / Artist Profiles

Each year, Volta supports hundreds of musicians through various programs, including Members, Volta Residents, ABVOLTA, House Artists, and rentals.

Volta does not select musicians based on genre or personal taste. A comprehensive plan and vision from the artist are essential for moving forward with a collaboration. Volta values the professionalism demonstrated by the artist and their commitment to their artistic work as key factors in establishing a balanced partnership. Volta encourages projects with an innovative and experimental character, but this is not a requirement.

Volta continually seeks out distinctive and driven musicians. This is important for maintaining an exciting, innovative, and experimental musical landscape.
These criteria apply to all musicians at Volta (residents, members, house artists, and ABVOLTA).

Musicians who:

  • Start from a clear artistic vision to tell their own story in a unique language.
  • Dare to dream creatively, pursue their vision, and balance it with realism and discipline.
  • Take responsibility for their artistic practices.
  • Engage with dedication and more than just casually in their artistic practices.

Additionally, there are certain fundamental criteria that Volta considers important for a successful collaboration.
Volta gives preference to projects and musicians who:

  • Have artistic growth potential.
  • Fit within a diverse selection, both in terms of profile and genres.
  • Show innovative and experimental qualities.
  • Provide a relevant contribution to the current music sector.

It is important for us to listen to the reasons why a musician or group needs rehearsal space at Volta. The criteria considered here include the need for rehearsal space, the sustainability of the trajectory, and artistic potential. Groups looking to rehearse more sporadically can also find space at Volta, but priority will be given to artists we want to support in a sustainable way throughout their journey. Groups in more financially precarious situations will be given priority over those who are financially stable and not dependent on affordable rehearsal spaces.

Within Volta's development program, there is a strong emphasis on promoting gender balance and diversity in cultural backgrounds, both for the residency programs and the members. This commitment reflects Volta's broader vision to create an inclusive and representative artistic community that embodies a wide range of perspectives and experiences.

Artistic Council

The Artistic Council was established to strengthen and make Volta's artistic vision more inclusive. By incorporating broader perspectives and expertise from the music field, the council ensures that artistic choices are more diverse and representative, matching the evolving needs of both the audience and the sector.

Volta recognizes the necessity of integrating broader perspectives and has therefore formed this council. The Artistic Council acts as a bridge between daily operations and the Board of Directors, playing an active role in artistic decision-making.

The council consists of relevant players from the music field, who share their expertise and insights to broaden and make the selection process more inclusive. This ensures that Volta can better respond to the needs of a diverse audience and users, allowing it to continue innovating in a changing cultural landscape.

By involving the Artistic Council in these decisions, Volta ensures that its artistic vision remains strong, diverse, and future-oriented.

The Artistic Council:

  • Mathilde Luytens
  • Florian Meersman

Vulnerable Position of Artists

In line with the focus areas of the strategic vision, special attention is given to the vulnerable position of musicians. Many musicians find themselves in a precarious situation between their artistic ambitions and practical, financial realities. Volta acknowledges this challenge and sees it as its mission to support these artists on a professional level. The illustration below outlines the various programs and pricing structures within which musicians can make use of the workspaces at Volta.
